Sort Bluewin email automatically: filter rules, email app or AI?
Many people in Switzerland have had their email address with Bluewin for years. The address stays, the amount of email grows. There are three ways to keep it tidy: filter rules in webmail, rules in your email app, or an AI that works via IMAP. Here is what each approach does.

Approach 1: filter rules in Bluewin webmail
In Swisscom's webmail you create folders and, in the settings, filter rules: if an email comes from a certain address or a word appears in the subject, the server moves it into a folder. Because the rule runs on the server, the email is already in the right place on your phone and in every email app.
The limit is the same as with any rule: it only applies when the email looks exactly as you expected. The invoice of a new supplier, the enquiry of a new customer or a subject without the keyword slip through.
Approach 2: rules in your email app
Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird can do rules too. They are often easier to set up than in webmail, but there is a catch: many only run on the device. If the computer is off, the email stays in the inbox, and that is where you see it on your phone.
Approach 3: AI via IMAP
Bluewin mailboxes can be reached via IMAP (server imaps.bluewin.ch, port 993, encrypted). Through this access a tool can read new email and move it into your folders, just as you would by hand. Instead of rules, you describe each folder in one sentence, such as "invoices and reminders from companies" or "enquiries from customers". The AI compares every new email with these descriptions.
Which approach fits?
| Webmail filter rules | Rules in the email app | AI via IMAP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | free | free | depends on the tool |
| Runs without a device | yes | mostly not | yes |
| New senders | slip through | slip through | are recognised |
| Upkeep | grows with every exception | grows with every exception | adjust descriptions |
| Access needed | none | none | password via IMAP |
The approaches do not exclude each other. A filter rule handles clear cases like the electricity bill, the AI sorts the rest.
